Your trip to Antarctica

An expedition to Antarctica is a lifetime experience. We at Polar Cruises are comitted to make your trip to Antarctica, one worth remembering

Why Antarctica?

During an Antarctica Expedition, you will be able to explore a wild and inviting continent that reflects Antarctica's origins from the beginning to our present day. History starts about 250 million yeats ago, where Antarctica was in the subtropical band of the planet. Antarctica was covered in forests, inhabited by many species such as amphibians and reptiles. Back then, it belonged to the supercontinet of Gondwana. As time passed, it separated itself geographically about 65 million years ago and it began to drift towards the South Pole. While being in the Southern Pole, it started to gradually cool down, ice started to form and it became a very inacessible land for humankind.

The Antarctic ecosystem that we now get to explore in the expedition is the result from a prolonged evolutionary process that has been going on for centuries. Life has formed and adapted to extreme polar environments. As a result it has produced a system composed of a limited number yet wonderful species that are only found in the extreme polar environment. Nowadays, we see a system of species that inhabit the Antarctica and live in their own exosystem. Penguins, whales, seals, seabirds, and many other species are found in this great Antarctic ecosystem.
On the continent, there are five species of penguins: the Adelie, Chinstrap, King, Gentoo, and the Macaroni penguins. Penguins in Antarctica typically have a diet of squid, fish, and crustaceans.

Thanks to their warm blubbery bodies and fantastic swimmers, seals are perfectly adapted for life in the Antarctic ecosystem. There are up to four species of seals that you could see on your visit: the Elephant, Leopard, Crabeater, and the Weddell seals.

Additionally, during your Antarctica expedition, you could see several species of seabirds, including Albatross, Blue-Eyed Shag, Snowy Sheathbill, and more. The Antarctic seas have seasonal visitors. Three species of whales visit Antarctica every year: Orca, Humpback, and Minke whales.

Today, the Antarctic continent, without a doubt, is the most mysterious place on the planet. Its permanent ice sheet covering and almost wholly hiding its topography. In addition to being an ecological wonder, it has bewitched explorers, scientists, and voyagers alike for centuries.
