Mount Vinson, situated in the Vinson Massif and part of the Sentinel Range within the Ellsworth Mountains, stands as Antarctica's highest peak at 4,892 meters (16,050 feet) above sea level. As one of the Seven Summits— the tallest mountains on each continent— it is a sought-after climb for ambitious mountaineers. Mountaineering Bob documented his ascent of Mount Vinson earlier this year as his final Seven Summits climb.
"After nearly a year of preparation, I embarked on a 30-hour journey to Antarctica to tackle Mount Vinson, my last peak of the Seven Summits."
National Geographic notes that the Ellsworth Mountains were first observed from the air in 1935, but significant exploration didn't begin until the 1960s. Between December 1966 and January 1967, an American Antarctic mountaineering team reached the summit of this towering peak. While Mount Vinson isn't technically difficult to climb, its extreme cold and isolation present significant challenges.
